Multi-Period Trading via Convex Optimization

چکیده
We consider a basic model of multi-period trading, which can be used to evaluate the performance of a trading strategy. We describe a framework for single-period optimization, where the trades in each period are found by solving a convex optimization problem that trades off expected return, risk, transaction cost and holding cost such as the borrowing cost for shorting assets. We then describe a multi-period version of the trading method, where optimization is used to plan a sequence of trades, with only the first one executed, using estimates of future quantities that are unknown when the trades are chosen. The singleperiod method traces back to Markowitz; the multi-period methods trace back to model predictive control. Our contribution is to describe the single-period and multi-period methods in one simple framework, giving a clear description of the development and the approximations made. In this paper we do not address a critical component in a trading algorithm, the predictions or forecasts of future quantities. The methods we describe in this paper can be thought of as good ways to exploit predictions, no matter how they are made. We have also developed a companion open-source software library that implements many of the ideas and methods described in the paper. now Publishers Inc.. Multi-Period Portfolio Optimization with Constraints and Transaction Costs
We consider the problem of multi-period portfolio optimization over a finite horizon, with a self-financing budget constraint and arbitrary distribution of asset returns, with objective to minimize the mean-square deviation of final wealth from a given desired value. When there are no additional constraints, this problem can be solved by standard dynamic programming; the optimal trading policy ...
متن کاملCO2 emissions trading planning in combined heat and power production via multi-period stochastic optimization
The EU emissions trading scheme (ETS) taking effect in 2005 covers CO2 emissions from specific large-scale industrial activities and combustion installations. A large number of existing and potential future combined heat and power (CHP) installations are subject to ETS and targeted for emissions reduction. CHP production is an important technology for efficient and clean provision of energy bec...
متن کاملLinear Time Varying MPC Based Path Planning of an Autonomous Vehicle via Convex Optimization
In this paper a new method is introduced for path planning of an autonomous vehicle. In this method, the environment is considered cluttered and with some uncertainty sources. Thus, the state of detected object should be estimated using an optimal filter. To do so, the state distribution is assumed Gaussian. Thus the state vector is estimated by a Kalman filter at each time step. The estimation...
متن کاملIntroduction to convex optimization in financial markets
Convexity arises quite naturally in financial risk management. In risk preferences concerning random cash-flows, convexity corresponds to the fundamental diversification principle. Convexity is a basic property also of budget constraints both in classical linear models as well as in more realistic models with transaction costs and constraints. Moreover, modern securities markets are based on tr...
متن کاملFirst-and Second-order Optimality Conditions for Convex Composite Multi-objective Optimization
Multi-objective optimization is known as a useful mathematical model in order to investigate some real world problems with connicting objectives, arising from economics, engineering and human decision making. In this paper, a convex composite multi-objective optimization subject to a closed convex set constraint is studied. New rst-order optimality conditions of a weakly eecient solution for th...
